Recently I found a book that described methods of communicating with the dead through visual feedback and tape hiss, methods that closely resembled the process I use to create most of my work. Amused that perhaps I had mistakenly recorded a ghost somewhere in the past, I became obsessed with the idea of an image that could only exist at the moment of it's destruction. Visual ghosts. Images born from their own death. 'OFF' was created with a feedback loop passed through a broken video switcher being toggled on and off. The image only has a fraction of a second to bloom before it decays. I recorded two hours of footage, then went through frame by frame to extract the moments of uncertainty (usually less than five frames long) where the imagery truly was beyond my control.
